‘Annoying’: Virgil van Dijk confesses he really struggles to defend against former Chelsea attacker Arsenal sold

Olivier Giroud, a former Chelsea player, is the most difficult striker Virgil van Dijk has faced throughout his entire career.

Giroud, who was sold by Chelsea to AC Milan in 2021, is a tremendously underrated attacker who has accomplished a great deal.

The 36-year-old does not meet the criteria for an exciting forward endowed with speed, but he has scored some spectacular and crucial goals.

Two goals separate him from matching Thierry Henry’s record as France’s all-time leading scorer.

Last night in the Champions League, the left-footer delivered a masterclass to help AC Milan qualify for the knockout rounds, scoring two goals and registering two assists in a 4-0 victory over Red Bull Salzburg.

He is not the first player that comes to mind when discussing the elite players of the past decade. In a recent interview, however, Van Dijk of Liverpool praised him effusively.

Van Dijk, widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in the game, has admitted that Giroud is extremely difficult to defend against.

He is unquestionably a street-smart forward who is incredibly intelligent with his movement and skilled in the box.

When asked about the most difficult striker he’s faced in his career, Van Dijk told  The Overlap: “Funny enough, Giroud. I feel like I got him but in some way he always managed to score.

“Whether it was with Arsenal, Chelsea or France. I said it to him when we won the league and we won 5-2, we were 3-0 up and he scored a scrappy goal. And I said you scored again!

“I would say that he is the guy that scores against me and just the annoying person. I’m going for Giroud because he’s a bogeyman – annoying!”

Giroud has scored 22 goals in 55 Milan appearances and won Serie A with the club last year. Consequently, some Chelsea supporters are still upset that he left Stamford Bridge last year.

In October’s Champions League group stage doubleheader against Milan, Chelsea handled him with relative ease, but he’s still more than capable of scoring at the highest level.

Mohamed Salah stated earlier this year that he still considers Olivier Giroud a “top player.”

There is no greater indicator of an individual’s caliber than praise from peers and opponents.
