Alexis Mac Allister makes admission about Brighton’s late victory over Manchester United

Alexis Mac Allister, a midfielder for Brighton & Hove Albion, acknowledged that his team tried everything they could to break through Manchester United’s strong defence but were unsuccessful until they were granted a late penalty, which he converted to secure a 1-0 victory for his team.

This result leaves Brighton & Hove Albion’s opponents, United, with no points from the match.

Despite several attempts, Manchester United were unable to score and seemed destined to leave with a draw, but a handball by Luke Shaw in the penalty area gave Brighton & Hove Albion the opportunity to win.

This victory is significant for Roberto De Zerbi’s side, while Erik ten Hag’s team remains two points behind third-placed Newcastle, and they have yet to win away against any of the current top-nine teams in the Premier League this season.

Mac Allister, who scored the winning goal, expressed his admiration for his team’s performance after the game and claimed that they deserved to win after a closely contested match against Manchester United.

“We did everything to score but we could not do it,” he told Sky Sports. “In the end, we got the penalty. It is easy to play in this team. They help me to be a better player every day.”

He added: “I’ve been here three, three-and-a-half years already? And I know what this club gave to me, I’m really grateful with them, really happy to be here.

“I try to transmit that to my teammates, the young players – South American players, which we’ve got a lot. It’s a fantastic team, it’s like a family so every time I get to the pitch I really enjoy playing here.”

Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele acknowledged that the team had additional motivation going into the match against Manchester United, as they had lost to them in the FA Cup semi-final last month on penalties. The game ended in a goalless draw after 120 minutes, and United won the shootout 7-6 at Wembley.

“That was special. It was a big night for us,” the shot-stopper said. “We played really well. It was two good teams going toe-to-toe, really enjoyable to play in. It wasn’t about revenge or anything like that.

“Did we have a little bit extra motivation? Yes probably, but I don’t think it spilled over into any more than that and we deserved to win. Massive. It is a big three points for us.”

Manchester United will have an opportunity to bounce back from their defeat when they play against West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
