Alex Iwobi proves he is still a Gunner at heart with a classy message to his former club after Everton defeat
Alex Iwobi, who used to play for Arsenal, showed his loyalty to the club by sending a gracious message after his current team, Everton, defeated Arsenal in a Premier League match.
The game saw Everton pull off an upset as they beat the league leaders and Iwobi played a significant role in the victory, giving Ben White a hard time on the left flank.
The 26-year-old Nigeria international had spent 15 years at Arsenal, joining the club at the young age of 9 years old.
The winger scored 15 goals in 149 appearances for his hometown club, helping them win the FA Cup in 2017.
After Everton’s morale-boosting victory, Iwobi posted on social media: “Nice To See Some Old Faces, Even Better To Win!”
He also posted an Instagram story with pictures of himself in Arsenal training and hugging Arteta after Saturday’s game, with the caption “Big respect!”
Although Iwobi left Arsenal just a few months before Arteta succeeded Unai Emery at Emirates Stadium, he made his debut for the Gunners during the 2015/16 season, so he briefly played alongside the Spaniard.
His heartfelt message demonstrates that he still has a great deal of affection for the club where he rose through the academy ranks before becoming a Premier League and international fixture.
Iwobi’s goal against Arsenal was his first of the season, but he already has six assists and is expected to play a significant role in Everton’s attempt to survive.
While the performance of the Toffees impressed Dyche, the Englishman acknowledged that the hard work has just begun. He stated in his post-match press conference: “There is a reality to how I work. It’s not that I don’t enjoy it – I do enjoy it. I’ll be driving home thinking, ‘This is a really good start for us’, but I’m not naive – I’ve been in it for a long time.
“That win doesn’t solve everything. We’ve got to put layers and layers and layers on top of that. It’s a great start point, of course. Arsenal are flying but the next win isn’t guaranteed because of it and I’ve told the players that already. I’ve told them to come in ready to start again on Monday, to keep working and to keep improving.”
The following Monday, Everton will travel to face local rivals Liverpool, while Arsenal will face Brentford on Saturday.
