‘A worry!’ Paul Scholes identifies one United player without whom the team would struggle

Paul Scholes believes that Lisandro Martinez has already established himself as a crucial element of Erik ten Hag’s revamped  Manchester United  squad.

Following Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford, the Red Devils came within three points of the Premier League lead.

Marcus Rashford scored twice on the counterattack after United withstood an extended spell of second-half pressure to secure all three points. United were second best for the whole of the enthralling match.

Martinez, a summer signing from Ajax who is swiftly putting to rest concerns about his lack of height, was instrumental in keeping the Gunners at bay.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been particularly outspoken about his belief that the Argentine international would struggle to adjust to English football, but on Sunday, Martinez offered his detractors even more reason to ponder.

Together with Raphael Varane, Martinez delivered a second assured effort before being replaced with ten minutes remaining.

His substitute, club captain Harry Maguire, was booked almost immediately for a clumsy tackle on Gabriel Jesus, and Scholes believes it would be a “worry” if Martinez were to miss a significant amount of time.

He said: “I go back to possession where Mikel Arteta’s saying he’s in control of the game with his interview there. It doesn’t matter.

“There are so many teams in these big games where they come away from Old Trafford a lot of times in big games wondering how have we not won, we’ve played great.

“At United it’s about the determination more than anything you know the talent is there but it’s about getting up to people, stopping people, getting up to people being solid at the back.

“Having that solid back four now is helping them. Martinez coming out of that might be a worry going forward.”
