If you are of a certain age and a Manchester United fan, you probably recall hearing about Zoran Tosic and his path to becoming the next great thing.

The former Serbian international was acquired from Partizan for £6.9 million in 2009.

Tosic was only 21 years old at the time, but he was viewed as a future star on a United team loaded with talent.

Sir Alex Ferguson thrust him into the limelight, with Tosic making his debut against Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round of the FA Cup. He was substituted for Cristiano Ronaldo near the end of the second half. There is no pressure whatsoever.

Tosic was given the number 14 jersey, signifying his promotion to the first team.

He would only make two more substitute appearances for the remainder of his rookie season.

Ferguson believed in Tosic’s skill, but the winger believes he was promoted too quickly to the Premier League.

In 2012, he told the Daily Record: “It was such an exciting moment to go there and to meet Sir Alex. I had grown up as a United fan so to be working for the man who had brought so much success to the club was just unbelievable.

“However, there is a big difference between the Serbian and English leagues and when I arrived in Manchester, I discovered I was not yet ready for that level.

“I spoke with Sir Alex many times and he kept telling me I had quality and just had to keep working hard.”

In his second season, Tosic was limited to two League Cup appearances and determined that a loan move would be ideal for his development.

Upon his 2010 return, Tosic made a permanent move to CSKA Moscow, a decision he frequently regrets.

He continued: “I wanted to play more games so went to Koln in Germany on loan and had a great six months there.

“When I came back to Manchester I was expecting to play more games for United but it didn’t happen. In the end, I wasn’t sure I was going to get the chance I felt I deserved so decided to change clubs.

“Even now I am always thinking about that moment. Maybe I shouldn’t have been so quick and should have worked longer to show Sir Alex.

“Maybe I should have stayed and fought for my place. This was Man United after all.”

Now 35, Tosic plays for Kazakhstan outfit Tobol Kostanay. He’s scored five goals and registered eight assists in 23 league appearances this season.
