A footballer dies after receiving a flying kick to the chest from an opponent during a friendly match
During a friendly football match in Brazil, a footballer died after receiving a flying kick to the chest from an opponent.
Geovani Biancho, 42, a father of one, died shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
An unnamed 21-year-old man was detained by police but released on bail pending the outcome of an ongoing criminal investigation because he was not caught “red-handed.”
According to local reports, he confessed to the assault but claimed he “lost his head” in a fit of craziness.
Amateur player Biancho was attacked on Saturday during a friendly match near the city of Carlos Barbosa in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, leaving behind a wife and a three-year-old son.
He was a member of the Torinense Recreational and Cultural Sporting Club.
A witness reportedly told police that after committing a foul, he got into an argument with a player from the opposing team, but that the aggressor was a third man who hit him in the chest with a flying kick.
The unnamed witness told a local paper: “We thought he was going to separate the two men including the victim who were arguing but instead he ran up to him and delivered a flying kick.”
Geovani’s teammates helped him after he began convulsing on the ground, and an ambulance was called, but he died shortly before midnight the same day.
According to reports, the attacker fled the scene before being apprehended.
Following a wake, the deceased man was buried on Sunday.
A regional cup final scheduled for the same day has been rescheduled for December 19.
In October, a Brazilian footballer was charged with attempted murder after being caught on camera brutally kicking a referee in the head during a game in the country’s south.
The player, William Ribeiro of Sport Club So Paulo, assaulted the referee after he was called for a foul during a league game against Guarani.
The game was called off for nearly 15 minutes while referee Rodrigo Crivellaro was taken to the hospital. He was eventually released.
Ribeiro booted Crivellaro to the ground before taking another horrible kick to the head as the ref lay helplessly on the ground, according to video footage from the match.
