Enzo Maresca Confirms Cole Palmer’s Availability for Wolves Clash After Injury Scare Against Servette

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has eased concerns surrounding the fitness of Cole Palmer, following the young star’s premature exit from their Europa Conference League match against Servette.

The 22-year-old, who has been a standout performer for the Blues, left the pitch in apparent discomfort, sparking fears among fans that the injury could sideline him for the upcoming Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Palmer, who was named as a substitute for Thursday’s first-leg clash at Stamford Bridge, joined the warm-up at halftime after a lackluster first-half display from Chelsea.

The Blues struggled to break down their Swiss opponents, prompting Maresca to make significant changes to the lineup.

The tension among the Chelsea faithful was palpable, with the team failing to impress in the opening 45 minutes, leaving the scoreline at a disappointing 0-0.

Christopher Nkunku brought some relief to the fans when he calmly converted a penalty just five minutes into the second half, giving Chelsea the lead.

The goal injected some much-needed energy into the team, and it wasn’t long before Enzo Fernandez, with a clever assist, set up Noni Madueke for what would eventually be the winning goal.

The 2-0 victory, however, was not without its anxieties, particularly as Palmer was forced to leave the field shortly after being brought on.

Palmer was one of three substitutions made in the 58th minute, replacing the young striker Marc Guiu. However, shortly after his introduction, Palmer was seen clutching his hamstring, an alarming sight for Chelsea fans.

He walked off the pitch and headed straight down the tunnel, raising concerns about the severity of the injury. Given Palmer’s pivotal role in Chelsea’s plans, the prospect of losing him to injury ahead of a crucial Premier League clash was a troubling thought.

In the post-match press conference, Maresca was quick to allay fears, offering a positive update on Palmer’s condition. “Cole felt something, but he looks fine. They already checked him. He looks fine, he looks okay,” Maresca reassured the media.

“So hopefully there is not any problem and he can be available for Sunday’s game.” This statement brought some relief to the Chelsea supporters, who have high hopes for Palmer this season.

Palmer has been a shining light in what has been a challenging start to Chelsea’s 2023-24 Premier League campaign.

The young England international, who made the switch from Manchester City to West London, has already left his mark, scoring an impressive 27 goals last season.

His efforts were recently recognized when he was awarded the PFA Young Player of the Year, a testament to his exceptional talent and contribution to the team.

Despite securing a 2-0 victory over Servette, the atmosphere at Stamford Bridge was far from celebratory.

The home crowd expressed their dissatisfaction, with boos ringing out during half-time and intermittently throughout the second half, even after Chelsea had taken the lead. When questioned about the fans’ reaction, Maresca addressed the situation diplomatically.

“The message is quite clear. At the moment we are learning how to manage the game. Probably in some moments, the right thing was to do exactly the same thing, but on the opposite side.”

Maresca went on to explain his tactical decisions, acknowledging the fans’ frustrations but standing by his strategy.

“For me, the intention to keep the ball is the correct one – especially when you are 2-0 up. The intention is good, but probably where is not good,” he said.

“So I can understand [fans booing], but overall I think it was important tonight to win the game – clean sheet, we did nine changes, we had players like Renato [Veiga] excel, Pedro [Neto], even Marc [Guiu], it was Filip Jorgensen’s first official game. So many good things.”

As Chelsea prepares to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, all eyes will be on Palmer’s fitness.

With Maresca’s optimistic update, fans will be hopeful that the young star can recover in time to help the team bounce back from their opening Premier League defeat to Manchester City.
