40-goal a season possible Chelsea signing branded foolish ahead of possible departure
According to former player Markus Babbel, Chelsea target Robert Lewandowski’s ongoing contract standoff with Bayern Munich is “annoying.”
The 32-year-old striker scored 41 league goals for Bayern in the 2020/21 season, breaking Gerd Muller’s 49-year Bundesliga record, yet there has been much conjecture over the player’s future.
Lewandowski’s contract with Allianz Arena is set to expire in 2023. Despite the fact that no talks have been begun for the striker, club officials are hoping he will stay and end his career at the club.
It is no secret that the potential new owners of Chelsea will aim to add a striker to their assault in the summer, and despite his age, Lewandowski is a man who continues to score goals on a weekly basis.
He might go for free in June 2023, or if the Bundesliga giants decide to cash in, he could leave this summer, and a number of clubs are starting to circle – and now he has been criticized for the club’s contract issue.
Babbel believes Lewandowski’s approach is dumb, comparing him to teammate Thomas Muller and stating that the forward should be more appreciative to the club.
“This howling around is annoying,” Babbel told Sky Sports Germany. “It is said that the appreciation is not enough for him, I can’t hear that anymore. No player has received as much appreciation as Lewandowski has at Bayern in the last 20 years.”
“Thomas Muller, for example, doesn’t make such a circus out of it. Lewandowski earns €25 million and wants more. No other Bayern player earns that much.
“There were times when he wanted to leave permanently, Bayern stood by him because they think a lot of him. There’s a bit of gratitude – not just demands.”
