Former Microsoft CEO and tenth-wealthiest person in the world Steve Ballmer has been linked to a Liverpool takeover.

The Fenway Sports Group (FSG), who have owned Liverpool since 2010, reportedly put the club up for sale on Monday, according to a report in Athletic.

According to reports, a comprehensive sales presentation has been created for interested parties, and Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have been retained to assist with the process.

FSG responded with a statement claiming “they would consider new shareholders” if the right buyer presented themselves, but that they remained “fully committed to the success of Liverpool, on and off the pitch.”

The complete FSG statement read as follows: “There have been a number of recent changes of ownership and rumours of changes in ownership at EPL clubs and inevitably we are asked regularly about Fenway Sports Group’s ownership in Liverpool.

“FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool. FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club.

“FSG remains fully committed to the success of Liverpool, both on and off the pitch.”

In addition to the uncertainty surrounding FSG’s position, there has been much speculation about who might be interested in purchasing Premier League giants.

Ballmer, the former chief executive officer of Microsoft, has been rumored to be a potential future owner of Liverpool, despite the fact that there are few actual links.

According to Bloomberg’s Billionaire index, the Detroit-born businessman with a staggering net worth of $86 billion (£73 billion) is the tenth richest person in the world.

He is also a highly accomplished sports team owner.

This year, Ballmer, who owns the Los Angeles Clippers, was named the wealthiest sports owner for the eighth consecutive year, and he has previously been named the “best NBA owner.”

Ballmer is relatively concerned with social issues. According to Influence Watch, he and his wife have funded political organizations that seek to expand opportunities for ethnic minorities. He has also contributed significantly to the passage of additional gun control legislation.

Regardless of whether Ballmer is genuinely interested, the rumors will likely please Liverpool fans.
