‘100 per cent it’s wrong,’ Mike Dean makes ‘scary’ claim in Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty against Ghana

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean considers the lack of VAR involvement during Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty against Ghana to be “scary.”

Portugal defeated Ghana 3-2 in theirFIFA World Cup opening, with Ronaldo scoring from the penalty spot after Mohammed Salisu committed a “foul.”

Many viewers disagreed with the call, believing that Salisu had possession of the ball and Ronaldo fell easily. Dean concurs with them.

“The defender clearly plays the ball,” he said after the game. “Ronaldo then touches the back of the defender, goes down, instigated contact.

“It’s not the referee’s fault – he’s given the decision on the field of play. The VAR, in my opinion, should have got involved and invited the referee over to have a look at it.’

He added: “It’s scary, I have to say. I’m just astounded. I like to back referees all the time but you can’t support stuff like that. You can’t defend the indefensible.

“It should have been overturned. He should have gone to the screen, he should have looked at it.

“There may have been some technical glitch that we don’t know about. I just can’t understand why he wasn’t sent to the screen.

Cristiano Ronaldo branded a “cheat”

Chris Sutton, a commentator for the BBC, also disagreed with the judgment labeling Cristiano Ronaldo a cheat.

“The VAR officials are absolute bottle-jobs,” Sutton told the Daily Mail. “It’s a terrible example for young kids around the world, everybody will be tumbling over.

“A brilliant player but it was cheating. The officials needed to be stronger. It’s embarrassing how they missed it. You don’t have to watch it too many times to see that he went over.

“Totally manufactured, out of order. I can’t believe that there are people saying that it was a penalty. It’s ridiculous, it’s cheating, it’s out of order.

“I know he has his fans within the media and around the world but come on. That was awful.”
