0 tackles, 0 interceptions – Journalists say 28 y/o Man City star looked ‘awfully rusty’ in Newcastle draw

Manchester City conceded three goals in a Premier League game for the first time since February on Sunday afternoon, drawing 3-3 with Newcastle United, and John Stones was one of many players who underperformed.

The 28-year-old started at centre-back alongside Nathan Ake but struggled to keep the Magpies quiet, failing to make a tackle or interception while being responsible for two of the three goals conceded.

Stones was beaten by Allan Saint-Maximin, who set up Callum Wilson to score from close range, and he gave away a freekick, which Kieran Trippier converted to put the hosts up 3-1.

90min’s Craig Vickers gave the England international a player rating of 4/10 and stated that it was “not the finest 90 minutes” of the weekend.

The Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski gave Stones a 4/10 player rating and said he was ‘awfully rusty’ at St James’ Park.

The 28-year-old played 90 minutes against Newcastle, had 55 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 94.3% of his 53 passes, failed to make a tackle, made two clearances, failed to make an interception, received a booking, and  gave away a foul.

Stones came off the bench in City’s 4-0 win over Bournemouth and was an unused substitute in City’s 2-0 win over West Ham United, but he struggled in his first Premier League start of the season.
